Event Horizon Team toont foto van zwart gat in hart van ons heelal

Het team van de Event Horizon telescoop van de NASA had vandaag groot nieuws. In 2019 waren zij er al eens in geslaagd een zwart gat op de 'gevoelige plaat' vast te leggen, maar die lag op 55 miljoen kilometer van de Aarde. Nu is het ze gelukt om een veel beter ‘kiekje’ van een ander enorm zwart gat, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*),genaamd, dat in het middelpunt van ons heelal, de Melkweg, ligt te maken. Met zo'n 26.000 lichtjaar ligt dit zwart gat een heel stuk dichterbij. Dat heeft als voordeel dat het veel beter 'te zien' en fotograferen is.

Zwart gat zelf niet fotogeniek

Dat wil zeggen, het gat zelf is natuurlijk niet te fotograferen, aangezien daar niets uit kan ontsnappen, ook geen licht. De foto die het Event Horizon team vandaag onthulde toont het silhouet van het zwarte gat. De gekleurde vlekken zijn gassen en andere materie die rond het gat zweven. Maar het blijft natuurlijk een super coole prestatie.

25.000 lichtjaar

Hoe dan ook, het blijft een bijzonder coole prestatie. Zeker als je bedenkt dat het zwarte gat zo’n 25.000 lichtjaar van ons verwijderd is, ruwweg de afstand van de Aarde tot het middelpunt van ons Melkwegstelsel. In feite kijken we dus naar iets dat 25.000 jaar geleden gebeurd is. Veel dichterbij zullen we ook niet komen.

Uiteraard, volgens de ‘Star Trek’ rekenmethode zou je er met Warp 9.99 binnen drie jaar naar toe kunnen reizen... maar... dan moet wel nog even een werkende Warp drive uitgevonden worden. En dan nog is het maar de vraag of het zwarte gat op dit moment nog bestaat… we praten, nogmaals, over iets dat 25.000 jaar geleden zo uitzag als we op bovenstaande foto zien.

In the main image, golden orange specks of light and tendrils of neon purple and blue clouds are set against a black background. Oranges and purples were captured in infrared light by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The blues represent data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory. At the heart of the main image are several bright white dots, including one that contains the supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy, known as Sagittarius A*.

Emerging from this bright white dot is an inset image, housed at upper right. The image is from the Event Horizon Telescope. It shows a bright, orange ring with three golden yellow spots and red aura. This is gas around the event horizon of the galaxy’s supermassive black hole. The bright ring is formed by light bending in the black hole's intense gravity.
